"An Apple a Day Bunch" Post Here

I weighed in and lost 1 pound. I'm going to try and do more exercise this week to make sure that I keep losing. Even if you maintain I think that's great!

"Wonky's Book Worms" Report For January 25 - 31, 2010

Wayne and I have read a little ahead of the schedule. We pondered and reread Chapter 22 together this evening for the second time. Wayne commented on how difficult it would be to be willing to sacrifice your own son. Abraham had to have so much faith to be willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Do we have enough faith to be willing to do all that God commands us?

The Old Testament is centered around our Savior, Jesus Christ and the people were looking forward to his birth here on earth. Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son just as our Heavenly Father allowed his own son, Jesus Christ, to be sacrificed. Am I willing to sacrifice everything if the Lord required this of me? I would hope that I would be willing and I can apply this principle to how I live my own life every day by looking at my thoughts and actions. Am I living as the Savior wants me to? When I have a difficult choice to make do I think first, "What would Jesus do?"

How would you apply the things that you have read this week to your own life?

Meeting Wayne

The first Sunday in January 1974, I was singing in Church and Wayne was in the congregation sitting with a girlfriend. After the meeting was over Wayne told his friend, "Excuse me for a minute" and walked up the aisle a little where I was sitting and told me that he enjoyed my solo. He went back and got his girlfriend, and I didn't think too much of it.

Before this Sunday I had already met Merrill, Alan, and Jay. I attended Merrill and Mary's wedding reception with a date in Heber City because Mary had invited me. We both belonged to the same service club at Brigham Young University. I asked Jay and Alan one day if there was another brother. They said "yes," but told me that he was kind of weird, spent a lot of time in his tool room, and liked to reload bullets. From their comments I formed the impression that Wayne wasn't very friendly or social and was probably boring.

Before meeting any of the Osmonds, I didn't know one specific thing about them. I don't ever remember watching them on the Andy William's show or remember seeing or even hearing anything about them other than they were a group of brothers that sang together and they were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints like I was. I don't think I even knew what songs they sang. Later, after attending one of their shows in Las Vegas, I recognized their hits but didn't know they were the artists.

I was living at the Riveria apartments in Provo when one of my roommates called, "There's the Osmonds," and everyone dashed to the glass sliding doors to watch them walk across the parking lot from our apartment. By the time I got to the window I only saw one Osmond, who I think was probably Wayne.

The Osmonds had bought Riveria apartments, which was BYU housing. They remodeled the area of the office building that was behind and above the main office where there had been other businesses previously. Mother Osmond wanted her boys to get acquainted with some friends of their same faith and what better place could there be? Provo was basically a college town with students that attended Brigham Young University, which is a private university owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The following Sunday I noticed that Wayne was sitting right behind me in Sunday School, and after the meeting we chatted for a few minutes. I was totally surprised when a couple of hours later he knocked on my apartment door and wanted me to go flying with him in his new airplane. That afternoon and evening I discovered that Wayne was really nice, friendly, humble, easy to talk to and fun to be with. He was totally different than what I had assumed.

Jimmy would have had my vote!

Just finished watching "Popstar to Operastar." If I had been a judge Jimmy would have been moving on to next week's show. Jimmy needs to start a show "Operastar to Popstar." Wouldn't you love to see the judges in that show? It's really difficult for most singers to go back and forth from classical to pop. There are a few singers that can pull it off but not too many. When we were newlyweds, Wayne tried to teach me to sing pop and I tried to teach Wayne to sing opera. I think Wayne did a lot better job at singing opera than I did singing pop. I finally got so frustrated that I didn't even want to try anymore. Wayne and I have sung duets in church before and we both just try to sing somewhere in between the two. I try not to sing with so much vibrato and Wayne tries to hit the note straight on without scooping. I don't know if it sounded very good or not. The most important thing is that we were willing to participate. That's what I tell myself and try to convince myself of every time I participate in something. Nothing is ever 100% perfect and there is always someone that can do a better job no matter what it is. Even when someone sets a world record it is always beat eventually. These are my thoughts on perfectionism. It's easier said that done. Are you a perfectionist? What do you do to deal with it? I'd love to hear some of your ideas.

Have you heard Double Lovin' on the CVS Commercial?

Last night I was working on the computer and watching television with Wayne when we heard, "Double Lovin'. It is being used on a CVS commercial. How fun to hear it being played again. Did you watch President Obama's speech last night?

The brothers have been invited back to perform on the largest cruise ship in the world in April, Royal Caribbean's "Oasis of the Seas." I still haven't posted pictures on Wayne's website of our cruise in January, so I'll try and do that tonight so you can see the ship. It's amazing! It would be fun to have some of you on the cruise with us.

Jimmy has really been practicing his opera singing. I don't know what he is singing but he says that it should be easier to stay in his operatic voice this week. I'm looking forward to hearing all the singers tomorrow afternoon on "Popstar to Operastar." He texted us back last week and said he goofed up but he was really going to hit it hard this week. If you miss the performance someone usually puts it on Youtube later. Need to go exercise.

How do you curb snack attacks?

I think Kristy's idea to share ideas on how to curb snack attacks will be very helpful. If I keep track and measure everything I eat, I tend not to just grab something and start munching. Sugar-free jello cups are really low calorie and I keep some of them in the fridge to grab. They're only 10 calories a cup and they help if I want something sweet. Wayne and I used to eat the Weight Watchers Frozen Fudge Bars all the time for snacks. We haven't bought any lately - probably because it's too cold.

Wayne watches his weight all the time but he will go all day without eating until dinner. He's always done that and I came from a family that ate 3 balanced meals a day. I can't go all day without eating because I don't feel well and get grouchy. He's always trying to lose a few pounds - especially before he has a show. He uses the excuse that he won't be able to fit into his show clothes. I keep telling him to buy his show clothes a little bigger, but he won't consider it. Sometimes he'll eat really healthy foods all the time and then there are other times that he'll only eat junk food for most of his calories that day. I think he wants to be known as "The Thin Osmond Brother."

When we first got married I was really disappointed that he didn't want to eat three meals a day. I remember making a heart shaped cheesecake with cherries on it and eating the whole dessert by myself because he was watching his weight. Actually maybe he didn't like the taste of it and didn't want to be rude and tell me. Who knows? When the kids were growing up at home I'd always make sure they had 3 meals a day and he'd come in and say "I'm not eating." That doesn't exactly encourage me to want to cook, so now that all the kids are married I don't hardly ever cook anymore and he's happy as a Lark. Most of the time we eat really simple foods that don't take much preparation. That's good for a diet but Wayne loves to grocery shop and so he'll bring all this junk food home from the store, especially if any of the kids or grand-kids are planning to visit.

Carbonated drinks, like Mountain Dew, haven't ever been on my favorites list. I've always preferred milk, orange juice or water. Sometimes if we're traveling and they don't have skim milk or juice, I'll have just water. If we go eat at a place where the water is questionable and there isn't bottled water then I'll have a diet drink, root beer or sprite. Soda pop is usually my last choice unless I'm sick with the flu.

Have you heard about the new IPad that was just announced? Would you buy one? Is it just a big IPhone without the phone?

What kind of apple to do like the best?

, WayneWayne and I love Delicious apples the best out of all the varieties that we have tried. Joe and Michelle like Gala apples because they think they are consistently good all the time instead of the red apples which sometimes are mushy or have a lot of pulp. Anneli loves Pink Lady apples which I really like too, but hadn't ever tried one until she introduced them to me about a year ago. I'm not sure what everyone else in the family's favorite variety of apple is - need to find out. With so many varieties of apples I shouldn't get bored eating an apple every day. I could try a different kind every day for how long?

Today has been a catch up day. I've been trying to get organized for the new year by cleaning out all the 2009 papers from my files. I also have started gathering everything to start on the taxes. Anyone like to do taxes? Finally finished going through all the mail since September when we were in Branson and now just have a few pamphlets and magazines to get through. I also have been catching up with the laundry, etc.

I started out with Wii Fit today and my fitness age has gone from 40 years old to 65 years old in one day. I knew that I shouldn't ever test my age again. Ha! The tests were new so I'm hoping that I did the tests wrong. I really enjoy reading every one's comments, ideas and suggestions and look forward to them. Got to go get a load of clothes out of the dryer before they get too wrinkled.

I'm back now and something smells really good. Wayne is lying on the couch watching Conan on TV eating a new snack. He put a beef hot dog in a little roll bun with a stick of string cheese. He says a minute and a half in the microwave is perfect for the cheese to melt. He then uses a fork to push the melting cheese back into the bun. He says it's just delicious! Try it and let him know how you like it. He topped off his snack with a Mountain Dew and Heath Bar. The best part is that he didn't even tempt me or put it under my nose this time.

"The Wii Fitters" Report Here on Tuesday!

This week I used Wii Fit 4 days for 30 minutes of exercise and walked 2 days for at least 30 minutes. It takes me about an hour to do 30 minutes of exercise using the Wii Fit but it's a better overall workout than just walking. I'm improving my deep breathing, balance, posture and strengthening my muscles. I've always wanted to learn how to do yoga and so I practice it a few minutes when using a Wii. When Joe and Michelle move I might have to invest in my own Wii system. It still takes a lot of effort, persistence and determination for me to exercise but you are all motivating me to keep it up. Thank you so much!

Donny and Debbie took a vacation to Maui!

At church yesterday a friend told me that he and his wife were in Maui and saw someone that looked like Donny Osmond. He asked, "Are you Donny Osmond?" and Donny replied, "I am but don't tell anyone." Ha! I guess they were also on the same flight together coming back to Utah. I was happy to hear that Donny and Debbie were having a vacation. They work so hard!

It's exciting to hear that most of you are either maintaining or losing weight. We're going to be so healthy. I've gone from an estimated fitness age of 65 years old to 40 years old in less than 2 weeks on Wii Fit. It must have taken me that long to figure out how to do the exercies correctly. I'm sure my fitness age will only go up from here so I don't think I'll take any more tests. Ha!

How about "The Wii Fitters" as the name of the exercise group?

"An Apple a Day Bunch" Please Report Here!

My skirt didn't feel any looser today than last week so I hope I'm pleasantly surprised to find tomorrow morning that I have lost a pound. I actually lost 3 pounds!!! I've got a long way to go but I'm feeling more energetic.

An Apple a Day Bunch!

When early explorers would bring back new fruits and vegetable into Europe they didn't know what to call them. Melons, avocados, cashews, dates, oranges, tomatoes, pineapple, etc. were all called "apple." Since we are all going to be eating a lot of vegetables and fruits on our diets to become healthier I thought this might be a fun name for the group.

Apples have so many health benefits. Apples are a good source of potassium, folic acid, vitamin C and contain traces of B vitamins, iron, magnesium and zinc. Apples aid the digestive system, and may prevent cancer and heart disease. Apples are rich in antioxidants and their consumption has been linked to a reduction in aging-related mental and physical degeneration such as Alzheimer's, wrinkles, arthritis, cataracts, and diabetes. Apples have also been recommended for headaches, bronchial asthma, inflammation of the bladder, anemia, tuberculosis, neuritis, insomnia, strokes, gallbladder stones, etc.

Apples may also help lower blood cholesterol so I'm going to try and eat one apple every day! Apples are a favorite diet food and you can find many popular apple diets. An apple a day might just keep the doctor away!

"Wonky's Book Worms" Need to Report Here!

Wayne and I have finished reading our 14 chapters this week. Wayne commented on how important it is to keep reading the scriptures over and over again because every time he learns something new. My main impression on this week's reading was how the Lord knows us individually, is aware of our actions and is involved in our daily lives. We are looking forward to reading your comments about how your reading this week has applied to your life.

Is there a way to play Tetris on the Internet?

Wayne just uses Nintendo 64 to play Tetris. He doesn't like the Tetris application on the IPhone. He might like playing with you on the Internet but I don't know if that is possible?

I think we'll just report on a different support group on different days since you aren't all on the Osmond Brothers Forum and it will take more time for everyone to report. Let's report our reading on Sunday, Diet on Monday and Exercise on Tuesday. If you haven't started reading yet the Old Testament yet come join us any time.

That means that Sunday, our reading group will report. Since it hasn't been quite a week yet it's O.K. if you haven't read your 2 chapters a day yet or 14 chapters this week. Let's just get started. Wayne's named the group - Wonky's Book Worms. (Worms like apples, book worms are smart and Wayne is participating in the group with us)

Jimmy made it to next week!!!

Thanks to all of you and your votes, Jimmy made it to next week's UK television show "Popstar to Operastar." We watched Jimmy over the computer live and didn't think that he should have been in the bottom 2 but everyone has their own opinion. It made the show exciting and stressful! It was fun to see Michelle there supporting him. I'm not familiar with any of the other pop stars. Are they really popular in the UK? What is your opinion of reporting on Wayne's forum on the Osmond Brothers' website every Monday about the support groups instead of the blog? There would be more privacy since we would have to sign in to the forum and it would be easier to keep track of the individual groups. We could post weight loss recipes and other items that would pertain to that individual group. Do you like the name "Go Away Little Pound" for the weight loss group? You can go to "Kathy's Blog" and the "Forum" from the top menu on Wayne's website. Any other suggestions? Waiting to hear more creative names for the groups. I have always loved Friday nights. Hope you enjoy your Friday night.

Typing Practice

Wayne started practicing his typing last night after I downloaded the program on the computer. He did learn to type in the army but just can't type very fast. I also got on my Wii Fit last night and we did our scripture reading together. It's going to take a lot of discipline to last for a whole year. Maybe by then it will become a habit?

Today I learned that my cholesterol is still too high so I've got to increase my medication. Maybe by the end of the year when I'm in such great shape I can decrease the amount. Now I have even more of an incentive to keep on my diet and exercise.

Still waiting for those ideas of what to name our 3 support groups. I looked on the Internet last night and there are so many different varieties of apples that if you thought that was a good idea, we could take on a different variety of apple for each group. There is even a Wayne apple!

Some of the apples that might be good to include in a group name are the Buff, Discovery, McLean (me lean), Redwell (read well), NuRed Jonathan, Miracle Mac Apples, Victory, Red (Read) and Ambrosia apples. Wayne thinks that idea is kind of dumb but what do you think? It also might be fun to use some of the hit songs that the Osmonds have used for the names of the groups like the The Yoyos, The Proud Ones, The Plan Group, etc. Michelle likes the hit songs idea the best! I also like the ideas that you have already submitted such as Wii Fit, the Fruit Basket, etc. Post all your ideas by tomorrow night if possible.

Does anyone know exactly what time Jimmy's show will come over the Internet tomorrow in Utah? Don't want to miss it live this time. I'm excited to hear all the contestants sing in their opera voices! It brings back fond memories.

Rindercella

Amy asked me to write down the words of Rindercella for her. That has been a major chore for the day! Wayne had to have every word exactly the same way as he tells it and the words had to be written just so. Amy has found an artist and she wants to publish a children's book using Rindercella or something. I'm not sure exactly what she is doing but she sure has a lot of creative ideas like the rest of the Osmonds.

Annette, Wayne thinks it is so cute that your grandson likes his book and carries it to school with him. Our grandson, Jacob, is 10 years old and I'm not sure if he has taken Wayne's book to school but he loves to tell jokes and makes up his own jokes all the time. His sister, Maia, that is almost 8 years old, takes Wayne's book to school and is deciding with her friends which jokes they like the best.

I also spent some time this afternoon going through a few boxes looking for a vintage photograph of Wayne to take to the autograph party in Burbank in February. I'm not sure exactly what they want or what they are going to do with the old photograph. Right now there are going to be over 70 different celebrities at the show. It sounds like fun to see all of them in person. Merrill, Jay and Wayne are going to represent the Osmonds. You can learn more at http://www.hollywoodshow.com if you are interested.

Everyone keep plugging away at your goals. After I do my exercising and reading maybe I'll have some time to watch "The Travels of Jamie McPheeters on YouTube. Right now I need to download Wayne's Marvis Beacon software so he can practice his typing instead of playing Tetris.

Wayne is Kathy's Clown!

I actually thought that "Kathy's Clown" would be a cute name for Wayne's Joke book but no one else seemed to like it but me. Paul and I must have a similiar sense of humor? I've loved reading all your suggestions for names of our 3 groups. Keep them coming!

Wayne thinks his name was Leviticus on the "Travels of Jamie McPheeters." Is that right? He remembered that Merrill's name was Lamentations? I haven't ever watched one show of the "Travels of Jamie McPheeters." I don't have a clue as to what it was even about. I hadn't even heard of the TV series until a few years ago. I'll have to find a copy to watch.

We went down to the store today and bought a copy of "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing." Wayne's excited to start training. I need to beef up my skills on the numbers and symbols so we're both going to be practicing. Wayne has committed to 15 minutes a day. I'm excited because maybe he will be able to do all his own typing in the future.

You are all getting too good at Scrabble so Wayne bought "The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary," Fourth Edition, to study. Wayne's Scrabble players better watch out now!

Names for 3 Support Groups?

The diet group - I totally blew my diet yesterday after weighing in. I didn't exercise either. Last night when Wayne offered the pretzels and chips I said "no" at first and then finally gave in when he passed them to me the second time. I wouldn't let him have them back when tried to take them away. Ha! It's a good thing it was Monday. I've got a whole week ahead.

The exercise group - Some of you have suggested that we have an exercise group where we have to report in on Monday that we made our exercise goals, met our physical therapy goals, etc. Since all of us have different exercise goals we'll just check in once a week to report whether or not we completed our individual goals. My goal is going to be to do some kind of exercise (besides cleaning the house) 30 minutes, 5 times a week. That gives me the weekend off if I want it and is more realistic than saying 6 or 7 times a week. I've never liked exercising.

The reading group - Wayne and I took turns last night reading the Old Testament out loud to each other. The goal to read 2 chapters a day or 14 chapters a week seemed to be reasonable. Once we got started we were enjoying ourselves and Wayne suggested that we continue and so we read 3 chapters. It's a lot more fun reading and discussing what we had read together, so you might want to read with a spouse or friend too.

Wayne doesn't really like typing on the computer because he thinks that it takes too much time. I usually end up typing for him. He tells me what he wants to say and I type it for him. I'm going to get him a typing tutor so he can improve his speed. He said that he was willing to practice so that's going to be a goal for him this year. Maybe once he gets his speed up he'll contribute on the blog. Ha! I can always post his comments for him.

Everyone come up with at least one suggestion for the name of each group you are going to participate in so it will be easy to identify which group we are reporting on. I'll put all the suggestions in a box and have Wayne draw the name out of the box and we'll call the group that name. Tell us your suggestions by Friday. Got to go do Wii Fit now.

Reading Challenge

Some of you have expressed an interest in reading the Old Testament all the way from the beginning to the end with Wayne and me. We're going to be using the King James Bible version to read from because it is accepted in many religions (not just the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) as the most correct translation of the bible. If you are interested in reading this version and you don't have a copy of the book you can go to http://www.lds.org where you can read the text. After entering the site you go to the GOSPEL LIBRARY on the menu and then click on SCRIPTURES from the side menu. The OLD TESTAMENT will be listed there where you can click and start your reading.

Since we all have such diverse backgrounds and ideas we would like to emphasize the comments of our posts to be limited to how we can relate what we read in the Old Testament to our everyday lives right now. We'd like to discourage doctrinal differences on the blog. If you have questions you would like to ask us about our doctrinal view, please message us on Wayne's website and we'll be happy to share our view with you. We don't want this experience to be contentious or argumentative at all. We want this to be an uplifting experience that we can all share together no matter what our religious affiliations may be.

Some of you started reading the Old Testament tonight so let's get going! Let's have the goal of reading a minimum of 3 pages a day, 21 pages a week, which is about the same as 2 short chapters a day. At this speed it will take us a little over a year to complete the work. Let's have Monday be report day for everything. Maybe we can help each other conquer any other New Year's resolutions that you need help in achieving.

So far I have the following interested in reading the Old Testament. Let me know if I missed anyone or you would like to join us. I'm looking forward to actually completing my New Year's resolutions for a change. Ha!

How Could I Forget "What's His Name?"

I'm not sure why Jay and Jimmy call me Taffy unless it's just because it sort of rhymes or they think it rhymes with Kathy? It has been fun reading your nick names too.

It looks like we have a few more apples that want to join the support group - Annette, Mary M. and April. Let's hear some more suggestions as what to call ourselves. If you don't want to report on the blog where do you think we should report to each other? Keep up the good work! Even if you're just holding this week that sure is a lot better than gaining!

I wish I had started reporting to someone that I was holding at around 115 lbs. I never thought I'd be overweight. I used to eat milkshakes every day to try and gain weight in Junior High School. My dad warned me that it would catch up with me some day when we were fighting over the last piece of fried chicken. I used to lose weight when I was under pressure or stressed out. Now I start eating for comfort and energy when I'm tired or nervous. Boy, have things changed!

I celebrated losing 2 more pounds this week by going to lunch with a friend today! Oh, oh. I better watch it. Haven't done any exercise today yet either. Wii Fit for sure tonight. Wayne is getting his exercise right now by playing Tetris. Wii should come out with a physical fitness Tetris or physical fitness Scrabble then Wayne would really be in shape.

Nicknames

You're right - they call Donny "D" and called Jay "Jason." I haven't heard Jay called "Jason" since he named his son Jason but maybe they still do. "D" is the only nickname that I've ever heard Donny called. I haven't ever heard him called "Corky." I asked Wayne and he can't remember why that was his nickname so I'll have to do a little research on that one. He thinks it might have something to do with his Uncle Clark since "Clark" is Donny's middle name. They called my daughter, Amy, "Toothpaste" after Aim toothpaste and Steve "Hoss" because he was built like the guy on Bonanza when he was a baby. This is when we all traveled together everywhere in the 70's. Jimmy and Jay always called me "Taffy." I'm sure there were other nicknames. I'll let you know if I find out more.

This year we are studying the Old Testament in Sunday School. I've only read the Old Testament straight through 1 time so I've got a lot to learn this year. It's fun to visit my home ward. That's what it seems like lately since I've been gone more than I'm home - a visitor. Have any of you read the Old Testament all the way through? What did you think? I remember thinking some of the stories were R-rated or worse. Someone else commented on the blog that they were reading the Old Testament. Anyone interested in starting a reading group on the Old Testament? I could really use some motivation on that one.

Everyone that has joined the Diet support group should report on the blog tomorrow. Anyone have a creative name to call the group? What about "The Delicious Apple Losers Club" at One Bad Apple Dish. Wayne suggested the "Granny Smiths" or "Rotten Apples." Any other ideas? I wrote a list of those of you that mentioned you were going to participate. Let me know if I missed anyone. Thanks for the tips on the yummy treats. I'm going to give them a try.

Jim Bo Was Great!

I just watched Jimmy's performance on YouTube and it was really good. I'm excited that he is moving on to next week because I have everything set up ready to watch the show this coming Friday. It will be fun to hear all the contestants.

Wayne received a letter from Dr. Friedman and his MRI looks really good - so that's a big relief. He is having a few problems but they may be related to the radiation that he received after his surgery. We're going to have everything checked out while he has some time off. Thanks for your concern and support.

It was requested that I find out all the brother's nicknames. Wayne usually called Alan "Big Al," Merrill "Bear," Jay "Jay Bird," Donny "Corky," Marie "Sissy," and Jimmy "Jim Bo." Wayne was called Wonky Donkey, Squeak, and Wings. You can read on his website why his grandfather Davis nicknamed him Wonky Donkey. The Brothers call him "Wonk" for short now. Wayne's father nicknamed him "Squeak" because he had a high pitched squeaky voice when he was little and most of you know why everyone called him "Wings." He has always loved airplanes and was a little obsessed with them.

Wayne and I went and got a "pig shot" this afternoon. That's what Wayne calls it. Anyway there has been quite a controversy over the H1N1 vaccination. We both had our regular flu shots earlier this fall and decided to get this other vaccination since we are on airplanes all the time and around a lot of people. Did you receive your "pig shots?"

It's almost time to post the results of our weight loss for the week. I hope we are all sticking to our diets. Having your support has really helped me because now Wayne isn't pushing goodies into my face all the time. He knows I'm really serious and is a little disappointed that he can't buy all those treats anymore for me because he knows I won't eat them. Thanks everyone!!!

One of My Favorite Websites

Grandparents.com is one of my favorite websites. I just wanted to share this site with you if you haven't discovered it. I don't remember how I came across it but I've enjoyed many of the ideas and articles. I also remember taking a quiz on the site about whether I was a good grandparent and was a little disappointed when I missed quite a few questions and realized that I really needed to improve. Ha! Don't we all think we're the best grandma ever? What are some of your favorite websites?

I finished reading "The Untold Story of Olive Osmond" yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it! Closer to the end of the book there is a story where Father Osmond calls Mother Osmond an extrovert. Interesting! I hope you continue to give your opinions on the Osmonds being extroverts or introverts because I'm learning a lot from your entries. I've also been discussing this with Wayne. Another interesting perspective would be from their wives. Also what is the current definition of introvert and extrovert? Is one really better than another or is a combination of the two the best? I don't have the answers to these questions but it sounds like an interesting topic to delve into more. What do you think?

Virl and Chris gave us a copy of the book for Christmas which we really appreciate but I've seen the book advertised on georgevirlosmond.com.

Was Mother Osmond an extrovert?

Last night I read more than half of Virl's book about Mother Osmond and really enjoyed reading the details of her early life and courtship with George. One thing that Virl said really surprised me. He called her an extrovert. I've always considered her more of an introvert that pushed herself to be an extrovert. That has me thinking. Mother Osmond always seemed really comfortable around all her sons adoring fans and maybe in that sense she was an extrovert. I always sensed that Mother Osmond was actually a very shy person that forced herself to be more outgoing. Not that she didn't love people because I know she genuinely did, but she seemed content spending time alone, working on all her millions of projects. My impression was that she got up early in the morning to enjoy some alone time before the whirlwind began each day.

Being a shy person myself and trying not to be might just be my story instead. In a family of four I had a lot of alone time which I always enjoyed and still really need. I don't have to be with people 100% of the time to be content and happy. It was quite a shock to me all of a sudden to inherit a huge family that were together 24/7. I also remember being really intimidated around all of you in the 70's.

In my opinion George was more the extrovert of the couple. He didn't like to ever be alone and seemed to enjoy striking up a conversation with everyone he met. Only when the conversation turned to him personally and about his intimate feelings did I feel him become a little more uncomfortable. Towards the end of his life I felt like he finally started opening up a little to me and I saw a very tender side.

As I get older and everyone is getting younger than me I like to think that I'm more open and will say what I really think a lot more. In high school and college, I remember people telling me that I was really closed. I think age and experience have helped me gain a little more confidence. Social situations still exhaust me more than invigorate me though, which means that I'm still basically an introvert. Amy is the extrovert in our family. She thrives on socializing and being with people. Whenever we have a difference of opinion, which isn't very often, she reminds me that it is because she is an extrovert and I'm an introvert. She's right, it always explains any differences. Isn't it nice that everyone is different. It makes life so much more interesting and entertaining.

It guess it all seems to depend on one's definition of an introvert and extrovert. Your comments and ideas would be really interesting to read. What Osmonds do you think are basically introverts and which ones do you think are extroverts? Are you an extrovert or introvert?

Wii Fit

Guess what? I found the receiver that was missing from Joe and Michelle's Wii. Michelle showed me online what was missing and I remembered seeing something like that. I didn't know what it was and there was some computer stuff on the table by it so I assumed that it went with the computer.

Michelle was so excited that I finally remembered where it was that she got me started. It's pretty fun! It took awhile to get set up and catch on but there are a lot of different activities to choose from so I think I'll use it regularly. Michelle and I discovered that you can run on it and watch TV on a different channel at the same time.

Since I'm using Joe and Michelle's board I really don't want to break it. CJ, did your board just quit working or is there a way to break it? Michelle reminded me not to actually jump on it but to bend my knees instead. Any other suggestions?

Shows Cancelled in Metropolis, Illinois

Shows have been cancelled at Harrah's in Metropolis, IL this weekend, so I can slow down and relax now instead of trying to get caught up on everything I got behind in when we were on the cruise. Maybe I can even start working on the mail that I still haven't gone through yet since we got back from Branson and the Christmas shows. Even better I can unpack for awhile instead of getting ready to leave again. I think I'll start reading the book about Mother Osmond today after I go have the vampire take my blood for my chlorestral test. Greg was a great vampire years ago and really enjoyed the job.

Thanks for your diet and exercise ideas. I was going to go buy a hoola hoop but when I mentioned it to my daughter, Michelle, she said that I can hoola hoop on her Wii Fit so maybe I'll try that first. It sounds like many of you enjoy using Wii Fit to exercise. Joe and Michelle have Wii Fit and I can use it here at the house but at Christmas time when everyone was here visiting the controller came up missing. I remember seeing it on the table and probably decided to put it in a very safe place so the grandkids wouldn't lose or destroy it. I hid it in such a great place that now I can't find it either. I'll spend some time today looking for it and hopefully be able to try it out. Thanks for all your encouraging words. Congratulations to all those who either stayed their same weight or lost some pounds. I'm sorry that Linda was in the hospital and lost weight the hardest way. Hope you are recouperating quickly. I also hope Leslie is feeling better after being sick last week.

If you haven't started your diet yet and still want to join us please do. Even after we get to our ideal weight we'll have to support each other to continue to look like movie stars and actresses. So, if you aren't over weight like I know a couple of you aren't that are on a diet with us, you can just report that you're holding. Ha! If you seriously want to join but are embarrassed like my sister told me she was, just sign up as a follower with a fake name and we'll never know who you are. You can make comments using your fake name, offer suggestions and we can support and cheer each other on. If you still want to use anonymous you could be anonymous 1, anonymous 2, anonymous 3, etc. so we know you are different people. I know I wouldn't try as hard if you didn't know my name or at least a nickname if I wanted to be anonymous.

Those that have reported this week so far are Karen in GA, Klr 105555, Kristy, Shundra, Rebecca, Karen M., Sheila from Toronto, Sherry of IN, cj6116, Linda, Leslie and Franki. It's been fun to know where some of you are living too. Did I miss anyone? Beverly, cj6116 and Emma are my friends on "Lose it" so I can really keep track of them. Invite your friends and family to join us and we'll really help each other to get healthier and stay that way! Congratulations to those that maintained their weight and lost a pound or more. It's O.K. even if you gained weight. Just start again today.

Did you lose 1 pound this week?

I finally dared get on the scales today and I actually lost 2 pounds this week. What a pleasant surprise from weighing in after my last cruises. I usually gain about 5 pounds a cruise. I told myself before weighing in that if I just didn't gain any weight and stayed the same that I would be happy. Thanks to all of you I controlled myself. I know I would have eaten those coconut ranch cookies for sure if it hadn't been for my great support group!!!! I hope you have all had some success this week. Many of you have lost more than 1 pound. That's really great! Keep us all informed so we can help each other. Maybe we should have a get together after we are all trim and slim to celebrate! What do you think? Any ideas? I love to read! It's probably my favorite hobby along with family history. I've spent the majority of my reading time the past 10 years reading court documents, census records, old newspapers, etc. but I did take time on this cruise to read a book that I received as a Christmas gift. The book is written by Greg's father-in-law, Joseph Fielding McConkie. I'm sure many of you are familiar with him if you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Even if you aren't a member you would enjoy reading this book if you want to know and become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. The book's title is "Valiant in the Testimony of Christ." Not only did I learn doctrinal truths about the Savior, his life and atonement but more importantly the book has motivated me to try and live a better life. The truth that has imbued my soul the most from this reading is that my testimony of Jesus Christ is the composite of all that I know, all I have experienced and all that I am. I must be bold and courageous as I testify that God lives, that Jesus is the Christ and all truth has been restored to the earth by the prophet Joseph Smith in these Latter-days. When we leave this week for Illinois I'm going to start reading "The Untold Story of Olive Osmond" written by Virl. Many of you know that Mother Olive and I share the same birthday - May 4th. We also share many of the same interests and hobbies such as reading. Merrill was reading the book in the airport and commented on how much he has learned about his Father from the book. Mother Osmond kept many journals and records so I'm excited to read about this remarkable woman's inner thoughts which reveal the depth of her mind and soul. Many of you have also called her Mother Osmond because of the genuine love she had for those she met. Was it a coincidence that she left this world on "Mother's Day?" I think not, as she was a mother to many of you all around the world.

What A Ship!

Royal Caribbean International's "Oasis of the Seas" is the newest and world's largest cruise ship ever! It is 3 football fields in length, twice the width of their next biggest ship, and 18 stories high. It is just amazing! This was the 6th time that Oasis of the Seas has sailed and the 1st cruise of the new year. The Osmond Brothers show was the first celebrity show on the ship.

On Monday, January 4th, Wayne and I left home at about 4:00 am, drove to the Salt Lake City Airport and met Merrill, Mary and Jay to fly to Dallas for a layover before flying to San Juan, Puerto Rico. After having to change gates 4 times in Dallas and meeting Steve Mason and his friend, Paula, we finally flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico and arrived at around 8:00 pm. There was supposed to be someone waiting at the airport in San Juan to take us to the San Juan Water and Beach Club to stay for the night, but they were no where to be found. After Merrill and Jay making multiple phone calls we finally gave up, loaded all our luggage and jumped in a Taxi van. We really appreciate Terri Shoemaker for sending us a detailed schedule and itinerary at times like this or we wouldn't know when or where we are supposed to be.

The hotel was white, had only blue neon lights with white sheer drapes everywhere. They were either trying to make it look like the sea or an eerie modern design. Wayne and I went directly to our rooms which were decorated in the same decor but comfortable and went to sleep. We all met in the lobby the next morning at 9:00 am and flew out of Puerto Rico to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to embark the "Oasis of the Seas."

It was Wayne's turn for the suite this cruise, which I love because there is a balcony facing the sea attached to the room which we can relax on while we read or watch the ship arrive and depart from the ports. After boarding the ship and getting settled there was a rehearsal and sound check with the cruise orchestra in the main showroom. The Brothers weren't excited to hear that there were 2 shows that night at 8:30 and 10:30 pm. We were all exhausted - especially the Brothers.

We were blessed with a good sound man on the ship, which makes or breaks the show, so everything went pretty smoothly except when they started singing "Through the Years." The film didn't start so they stopped singing while Wayne told a few jokes to fill in some time and soon the film was running and they were back to "Through the Years." That night we sailed to St. Maartens and after everyone had a day at St. Maartens The Brothers did another show that evening at 7:30 pm. Now they could relax for the rest of the cruise.

Thursday they filmed a TV interview at noon with the cruise director, then we spent the rest of the day checking out the ship while we were sailing all day to the Bahamas. Friday we spent the day at the Bahamas. We enjoyed a long walk into the city, Nassau to check everything out and tried to finish seeing everything on the ship. The cruise director said that if we spent a whole week checking out the ship we wouldn't be able to see everything.

On the Oasis there is a Central Park where the center of the ship opens to the sky which features lush, tropical grounds with flower gardens and trees, an original, handcrafted carousel, rock climbing walls, zip line, flow riders, ice skating, sports court, swimming pools, hot tubs, golf, table tennis, spas, workshops on scrapbooking, jewelry making and towel folding demonstrations, library, trivia games, yoga, water aerobics, body sculpt sessions, art and photo galleries, bingo, family festival, karaoke, card & game room, game shows, casino Royale, night clubs, medical facility, retail shops, fitness center, TV and online services, caricature drawings you can have drawn of yourself, jogging track, wedding chapel, Jewish Sabbath Services, Catholic Mass, teeth whitening, Restylane treatments, production shows, movies, seminars, night clubs, comedy shows, parades, water fountain shows, soccer shoot out tournament, etc. There are all kinds of dining, music and dancing options: jazz, latin, rock, classical, easy listening music, Boleros, seafood restaurant, Asian cuisine, Johnny Rockets, donut shop, ice cream parlor, bars, buffets, steak restaurant, cupcake cupboard, cafes, dining rooms, etc. There are even separate activities and areas for babies, toddlers, children and teens. These activites are all on board the ship. Shore excursions, scuba diving, snorkeling, shopping and other various tours are available at each port. I don't know what else there could possibly be that's "new" on future ships. I'm going to post some pictures on Wayne's website for you all to see. It's pretty amazing!

We spent the night cruising to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After departing the ship the next morning it took us about 13 hours traveling with a lay over in Atlanta, Georgia before arriving home. It was fun but exhausting trip! The biggest surprise was that my computer that I lost over 2 weeks earlier was finally done traveling around the world and was waiting for me in the Lost and Found at the Salt Lake City airport!

We're Home!

We just barely walked in the house from the cruise so I thought I'd see how everyone is doing on their diets? I'm hoping that I lost at least one pound because I didn't eat even 1 dessert on the cruise. Even when Wayne brought my very favorite Coconut Ranch cookies up to the suite and put them right under my nose so I could smell them, I didn't eat them. I thought about it all night until I went to bed though.

Please encourage Wayne to help me. He's always trying to feed me the junk food that I love, but I shouldn't eat. On the cruise ship I ate at the buffets and had green salads, fruit, vegetables, fish, chicken, fat-free milk and a little bread, just like some of you suggested.

I'm too tired to write much tonight but I'm still on my diet even though I haven't made any entries on my IPhone the past two days. Monday is the big day so keep plugging away everyone. I came in the house and saw chocolates on the refrigerator and almost forgot about my diet. In some ways it's easier to diet when traveling because I don't have anything sitting around for me to grab in the hotel rooms.

Wayne LOVES to grocery shop and he always buys too much of everything - sometimes 10 times too much and more. He especially likes to buy all the candy, cookies, crackers, etc. that I love. Wayne says that he likes me chubby, but I've got to go take another chlorestral test this week. I keep reminding him that this diet is about my health not appearance, but he forgets and is offering me treats all the time every day. He's not going to change, so I've just got to be really strong and say NO, NO, NO! I tell him that I don't want to disappoint my friends on the blog and then he usually lets up. Thanks everyone for helping me!

Favorite Story About His New Father-in-law

Joe thinks you would all enjoy something that happened at Church this year before we left for Branson so I'll share it with you. Most of you know that I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On Sunday we have a 3 hour block of meetings at church. Our first meeting in the morning is called Priesthood meeting for the men and boys over 12, Relief Society for the women, Young Women for the teenage girls and Primary for the children. The second meeting is Sunday School where all the adults are together, the teenagers have Sunday School classes with their age groups and the children stay in Primary. Wayne and I attend the Sunday School class that is in the same room as where I attend Relief Society. Just for your information the third block of meetings is where the whole family meets together in the chapel to attend Sacrament Meeting. There is a 10 minute break in- between blocks.

One Sunday morning after Relief Society was over, I found a place to sit on the second row from the back and reserved a chair for Wayne by putting my scriptures on it. Sunday School started and Wayne didn't come in so I thought maybe he didn't feel well and went home. After about 15 minutes into the Sunday School lesson Wayne quietly enters the room trying not to disturb the class or the teacher that was presenting the Sunday School lesson. I moved my scriptures so he could sit in the padded chair next to me. I got my scriptures out to follow along with the class and Wayne not bringing his own scriptures, bent over a little to look at my scriptures with me. There was a vacant chair on the other side of Wayne and soon he moved over to that chair, with a chair in-between us.

Wondering why he had moved, I looked over and there was a big, wet, yellow, spot on the padded chair that he had been sitting in. I'm sure the row behind us noticed what he was doing and I was a little embarrassed for him because obviously he hadn't been able to make it to the bathroom and had an accident. I looked over at him and he just sat there listening intently to the teacher. In about 30 minutes the class was over and it was time to move into the chapel for Sacrament meeting.

Wayne then told me that he had a horrible headache and had gone home in-between Priesthood meeting and Sunday School to get a Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew for some reason cures Wayne's headaches better then anything else - even medications. Before coming into the room for Sunday School he had put the can of Mountain Dew with a straw in the inside pocket of his jacket in order to sip on it during church without anyone noticing. When he bent over to read off of my scriptures his Mountain Dew had spilt on his chair and that was why the chair was wet and why he had moved over. The people in the row behind us had already left the classroom so I couldn't explain to them why the chair was wet. They still think Wayne wet his pants. I still can't figure out why he didn't tell me right after he spilt the Mountain Dew. I had spent the last 30 minutes trying to talk myself out of being embarrassed!

Don't forget to start your diet tomorrow and weigh in!

Lose It!

The IPhone application that I'm going to use for my diet is called Lose It! I created an account on the IPhone using my email address and password. I guess it keeps track of my weight loss and I can connect with other friends. Sign up if you have a IPhone and let me know if you want to connect. I set a goal of losing 1 pound a week and it established a daily calorie budget for me. Every day I can stay on track by recording my food and exercise. There is a progress chart, a searchable database that includes hundred of brand-name products and nutrient information built-in to each food. When I add exercise information from a list of activities, calories burned in exercise are automatically subtracted from my daily total.

It's convenient, but you can do the same thing using a paper and pencil. Basically it's a handy food journal that keeps track of your calories and exercise so you can make sure that you're not comsuming more than the energy you are using. It's all about calories in vs calories out. East less calories than your body needs and you lose weight. So if you don't have an IPhone and want to go on a similiar program just get one of your diet books that tells you the calories of foods and pad of paper to keep track of everything you consume.

I've read that after 40 years old the average person can only consume 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day to maintain their ideal weight. Everyone is different so I'm sure that calorie count is flexible depending on your activity level, genetics, medications that you might be taking, etc. I've tried a lot of diets and I've lost weight on all of them. The problem is after I get to my goal and go off of the diet. I just gain it back. Counting calories is the old fashioned way, but for me I think it is the only way that I'll ever be able to keep the weight off permanently.

Feel free to use whatever diet you choose and we'll just report to each other here on the blog every Monday. I'm hoping that reporting to you will be enough of an incentive to watch my food intake. It's really going to be tough for me starting on Monday because we are leaving for a cruise that day. I hope the ship is so big that I can't find the buffets.

More Christmas Tour Stories

The morning of December 20th I was in the bathroom of our hotel room getting ready to leave Costa Mesa and fly to Seattle, Washington, when I heard this melodic, pleasantly loud, male operatic voice singing "O Sole Mio." The singing sounded like it was coming through the wall from what was probably the bathroom in the room next to us. My first instinct was to start singing with him since I have studied voice and performed classical songs and arias from operas before Wayne and I were married. "O Sole Mio" was one of the first songs that I sang in Italian. I stopped and thought twice when I recognized that it was Jimmy singing and thought it might embarrass him or me if I started singing with him. Now I wished that I had started singing with him. The story would be a lot funnier. Ha!

That same morning the Brothers, Band, Michelle (Jimmy's wife) and I flew from the Orange County Airport to Seattle, Washington. From there we took a connecting flight from Seattle to Spokane where the Brothers performed at the Northern Quest Casino that evening. Usually they don't perform the same day as they travel. Wayne and I had our regular 3 carry on items, coats and the computer that wasn't lost yet. I headed down the aisle to exit the plane in Seattle and Wayne grabbed the carry on suitcase that was in the overhead bin and his show clothes and followed me off of the plane.

Wayne wanted to stop at the restroom that was close to the arrival gate before heading to the gate of our connecting flight, so I stood outside reluctantly waiting for him, hoping we'd make it in time for the connecting flight. I thought that I heard over the PA system a message for Michelle Osmond to return to the gate and assumed that was it Jimmy's Michelle. Wayne came rushing out and 3 flight attendants came rushing at us. Wayne had accidently pulled the flight attendant's carry on suitcase out of the bin and attached his clothes bag to it covering the suitcase, so I didn't notice that it wasn't our carry on suitcase. They were both the same unique color - black.

The flight attendants were out of breath and one of them was really upset, then relieved when she saw Wayne and then me holding on to the handle of her suitcase. I've never seen anyone so excited to see us before. We exchanged suitcases as she commented on how funny Wayne would look in her clothes and that she didn't know what she would have done if she hadn't seen us. Our Michelle must have borrowed our carry on suitcase sometime and put her name on the tag. Another close call but we made the connecting flight on time.

Happy New Year!!!

Are you all glued to your televisions today watching the football games? Have any of you set New Years resolutions? I pretty much have the same ones every year. So ditto for me. Maybe you could all help me with one of them this year? I need to go for an annual physical but I hate to mainly because I have gained weight. I've been putting the visit off because instead of loosing weight from my last visit I have gained weight. I'm not in the obese category yet, but my doctor must be trying to make sure that I don't go there because she talks to me about my weight every time I have a check up. I mentioned to Amy that I probably should go to an overweight doctor but she said that wouldn't help because after she had Jenny, her doctor told her to loose weight or she'd look like her, the overweight doctor. Anyway, I'm overweight as I'm sure all of you that have seen me in the last decade have noticed. I've heard that some of the Osmonds have lost a lot of weight using an application on the Iphone so I'm going to start using the application today. I haven't looked at the application very closely yet but I think that I use it to keep track of what I have eaten, my daily calories and physical exercise. I think it's pretty basic so anyone can do it without an Iphone. I haven't eaten anything yet today so I'm going to start right now. If you want to join me you can use whatever diet that you choose. I've heard a support system really works to loose weight but I don't want to go to regular meetings every week and weigh in. That sounds too embarrassing and horrible. It's hard enough to weigh in at the doctor's office. My goal is to loose 1 pound a week until I'm in the normal weight category. I'm sure my doctor is just trying to help me to get my high chlorestrol down and prevent heart disease. Do I have anyone else out there that wants to go on the diet with me? Let's get started today and report each week on whether we have lost a pound the previous week. How about reporting to each other every Monday. That gives everyone a couple of days to binge out before we start. Do I have any supporters? I'm hoping that if I have to report to you I'm going to loose 1 pound a week for sure! The hardest part will be not to put it back on again. Let me know your thoughts and ideas. Maybe you could encourage your friends and family to join us. The more the merrier. Have a great day and a great 2010!
