Lost Baggage

Our suitcases did arrive before the show in Branson last night, so Jimmy didn't get to perform barefoot. I'll bet he was really disappointed. Not! Some of you have expressed a little anxiety about losing your suitcase when you travel. The best advice that I can give you to deal with the stress of whether or not your suitcase is going to arrive with you is to expect the airline to lose your suitcase and if it arrives at your destination then that's a bonus.

Grandma Olive Osmond Traveling With Amy

From what I've observed, it is rare for the airlines to totally lose your bag anymore, but it could end up across the world before it makes it back to you, which could take a couple of days or more. Plan to live without your bag for a few days. The last time that I lost a bag forever was in the late 1970's. With the computer system they use now, they can trace your bag and usually find it eventually.

Steve and Amy in 1979

One summer when the kids and I were traveling with the whole Osmond family, the airline lost the suitcase that contained all my children's clothes. We were somewhere in the United States and I remember going out and buying all new clothes for Amy and Steve. From then on I usually mixed their clothes with some of my clothes, so if one suitcase didn't make it then we would still have at least another change of clothes. Of course there have been times when all our suitcases didn't make it with us to our destination. For those times, I always have all the bare necessities and an extra set of underwear and socks in my carry-on suitcase and purse.

Wayne Carrying His Clothes Bag

Wayne always hand carries his show clothes and shoes in a travel bag onto the airplane, so there is no way that his show clothes won't arrive, unless he forgets to take them off the airplane, which has happened before. Now I check every time we get off of an airplane to make sure we have our 3 items - his clothes bag, my carry- on suitcase and purse. On this trip when our bags didn't make it to Branson, he used my small sized deodorant stick before the show. I always include that item in my little plastic bag that can go through the security check at the airport. Make sure that you take everything that you can't live without for a few days with you on the airplane - especially any medications, eyeglasses, hearing aids and batteries, etc.

My Carry-on Bag and Travel Purse

You'll have a lot easier trip without as much anxiety if you plan on your checked suitcase not making it to your destination with you. You'll also feel gratitude and happiness if your checked luggage does arrive. You can usually arrange the airline to deliver your lost luggage to your house or hotel after it gets finished going around the world. It's a lot more fun to be surprised than to be disappointed!

Happy Birthday to Sarah!!!

Kathy - mentioning extra socks and underwear in your purse just made me chuckle. I was with my Grandma at the grocery store one day and she was looking for her money to pay for her groceries. Now usually she kept it down her slip (yes I had one of those Grandma's! LOL) but for whatever reason she had put her little bag in her purse and couldn't find it. So she had to take everything out of her purse including her spare set of false teeth and her UNDERWEAR!! Can you imagine being 15 and watching your Grandma do this? LOL Sorry you just made a flashback when you mentioned this. Ha Ha

Kathy, thanks for the travel tips! I travel a lot as well, and do the same thing as you. I always, always carry on the important stuff (jewelry, camera, etc.) as well as at least one outfit and pair of shoes. Another tip... your deoderant stick isn't an item required to be in the plastic baggie that security screens separately. That way you'll have more room in the baggie for other items that DO have to be in there!

I have only had that experience once before. We were traveling to Arizona with our young son, who still sat in a carseat. My father didn't have one, so we had to bring ours. Not only did the airlines misplace our luggage but also the carseat. My husband was having a fit!!!! We had to drive almost 2 hours to my fathers house and it was illegal to have a child not in a car seat. Well, the airlines came up with one - my son was a BIG boy and their car seat was for a small child. We got to my dads and about 5 am the next morning they delivered al of our things, I think we had 3 or 4 bags including the car seat, all safe and sound.

I usually carry an oversized purse and a small carry on bag now. Anything I really want to make it goes in there. I will take at least one entire change of clothes with me, just in case. Never have had that experience since, thank goodness!!!

Happy Birthday Sarah!! Love all the pictures Kathy, thanks for sharing!!!!!

I learned that the hard way when we flew to New Orleans in 2005--we got there and discovered one of our bags was missing. so much for the shower that we were gonna take before dinner hahaha! They were good to get it to us that evening though fortunately cause we were leaving the next morning on a cruise! They even delivered it to us at our hotel since we had no convenient way of going back to the airport to get it.

I am so impressed that you have 'hearing aids and batteries' on your list of essentials!
It is on mine too but I bet not on many people's.

Kathy,
What a horrible experience for all you, cannot believe they canceled your trip for a long time, then lost your luggage.

Did you know that lost luggage ends up in Scottsboro, AL? Some of us Red Hat Ladies went there one time, but some of the things they had for sale were too expensive and some of it looked like junk. I didn't purchase anything.

I love the pics you posted, that is a treasure pic of Amy with Mrs. Osmond.
Also, love the pics of Steve and Amy and Sara.
Their hair is beautiful. Happy Birthday to Sarah.

Your new purse is beautiful, good pics of you too. I looked the purses up on line, tooooooooo expensive for me. lol
I have to buy MBT shoes to wear most of the time, cannot afford the purse too. But I do like a person with a lot of room for all the junk I carry.

I always carry my meds in a large tote bag which I consider my purse. I have it filled with a little of this and that and keep it with me while traveling.

I also read somewhere put your name, cell phone # and the address of your destination inside your suitcase - so in case the luggage tag or airline luggage tag gets separated, they know how to contact you

I do not know how to correct an error once I have posted. I meant to type "purse" not "person."
