It's been a long month to say the least. It started out with Wayne and I having the flu and after a couple of weeks finally getting on some antibiotics. I started recuperating, but Wayne didn't, which led to him coming into the house, losing his balance, falling and hitting the back of his head and neck on the couch really hard in the same place as he had his brain cancer removed and the radiation. So . . . I can't say that it has been a healthy lifestyle month for us.
On a more positive note, I have lost 5 of the 10 pounds that I gained during the Christmas tour and Wayne is back to his ideal weight. I also started exercising on the Wii Fit this week and was really surprised that I could still do the exercises. Wayne is also exercising regularly at least twice a week and we are going on walks together. What has made the biggest difference is the delicious home cooked meals that Michelle has been making for us. They are loaded with fresh vegetables, beans, and fresh fruits, etc. They are also low in sodium and fat. We're off to a better start this month.
How is everyone else doing on their healthy lifestyle choices? I'd love to hear how you are all doing. Please post a comment and let us know how your month has been and what you are planning for the month of February.

I've been eating those shirataki noodles (carb and calorie free) with veggies and lean meat one meal day. And since going gluten free because of some sensitivity issues, I lost so much weight my weddng and engagement rings are going to have to be resized. (40 lbs). We have the Xbox Kinect and do Dance Central regularly.
Boy, it's been a rough month for both of you! Ow...poor Wayne! That must've hurt! I'm glad you are both doing better and are on the mend now, though. Onward and upward! Hugs and Prayers being sent your way!
As for exercise, I recently got myself a rebounder (ie: a small trampoline with a bar to hold onto). Basically, I walk and jog on that, and it seems easier on my joints and muscles. I haven't lost any weight yet, 'cause I just started. However, I am finding it's helping me to tone my muscles a little bit better. So I guess I'm gonna keep trying to "bounce" my way to better health and see how it goes...Ha!
Good luck with your efforts, and enjoy Michelle's healthy home-cooked meals! They sound delicious! :o)
Wendy
OW!! Poor Wayne, that sounds like it really hurt. My goodness!!! Glad he is up and recuperating.
As far as the healthy eating and all. The company I work for is involved in a huge weight loss and exercise thing for the next 3 months. They got gym memberships at a discount for anyone that wanted to do that. The people come in every so often and do talks on diet tips and such. I decided I would join them, but work on my own. Have gone back to counting calories, it seems to be working. The last time I weighed myself I was down 8 lbs., can't complain. Got some major issues going on in the family so stress is a big form of exercise right now, ugh!!! I have been going for walks with hubby, as the winter here in WI has been so mild.
Plan to continue same eating and incorporating more exercise into my schedule for the month of February - hopefully, minus the stress!
Here's hoping February is a healthier month for you and Wayne - enjoy the time off with him! :)
Can I ask what Wayne's ideal weight is? I remember they used to post that with all the guys other statistics in the teen magazines so long ago. It was fun to see...
We are revising our diet as my husband is facing some challenges his doctor believes to be warning signs for onset of diabetes. With his family history we have always been careful, but now we are having to be hardcore about diet and exercise . Good thing the weather is nice in Georgia so we can enjoy our walks most every day! Anyway, I hope February is a better month for both of you! Feel better!
hi Kathy am ss to hear that u and Wayne had the flu and Wayne losing his balance and falling over. I hope he is alright.
Ouch!!! Poor Wayne. I'm just glad he's alright. The flu. I had it once. I was soo miserable.
Wayne? Exercising? Now how long will that last? LOL So we will see a lighter Wayne next month.
I really haven't been exercising. I do need to lose some weight because I'm soo sick and tired of hearing my mother say I'm fat when I'm not.
I'm glad you're both feeling much better now. I'm also glad you've gotten back on track with healthy eating & exercising. Before long, you'll lose that other 5lbs plus how many more you want to lose. Keep up the good work!
I managed to lose 8lbs in 2 weeks, maintain it, then last weekend, I fell off the rail & gained back 3lbs. That's all my own fault, but am back on track again, eating healthy & in moderation.
I've ramped up my exercising big time because I'm thinking of testing for my 4th degree blackbelt in taekwondo in May. While I'm not sure I want to spend the big bucks to do it, I'm training hard & building up my endurance & flexibility just incase I decide to go.
While I know alot of my weight is muscle mass, it still throws me when I jump on the scale....hence the bad weekend. Now to get through Superbowl Sunday without too much damage. Sigh ;) hahaha
Thanks for finally letting us know how Wayne fell - I was afraid he had slipped on the ice outside on the deck he built. However the reward of being cancer free and such and just knowing that had to be worth the pain a little - he probably had some relief there. Good that Michelle was able to pitch in and be a good "Mom" to you guys!! You have such wonderful kids and you can be very proud!! I am looking forward to seeing you July 19 in Toledo Ohio this summer - be sure you come with Wayne so I can meet you, Kathy!! Love you so much and glad to hear everyone is doing better - I check the blog everyday and look forward to hearing from you! Stay safe and take care. "The Dog Mom"
I'm glad you and Wayne are feeling better and Wayne is getting the rest he deserve.
I started this exercise DVD, toning your muscles and stuff..I can't do that anymore..my scare from the gallbladder surgery was hurting me, all from bending down so much and tighting the muscles..I was like, this doesn't make sense at all. I am still walking and doing the treadmill.
This is day 32 with no sugar and soda for me. It just works the best for me. It's when I cave I get so addicted soooo fast!!! Trying to get my knee healthy so I can walk again.
To the others...GOOD JOB EVERYONE!!!
Rough start, but new beginnings!! I'm still stuck on the 5 pounds I gained over the holidays. I have to get motivated. Everyone wants me to do shake diets, etc., but I think eating "real" food in moderation is the key. I'm also realizing that at my age I really do need to start exercising. Glad you guys are walking. Walking I find is the best thing for me. However, like I said, I need motivation! Keep up the good work - both of you!!
I started a diet and fitness class 4 weeks ago called Rosemary Conley, so far ive lost 10lbs i have a long way to go but its a start limited with the fitness side to due psoratic arthritus but i try by sitting in a chair and doing some of them with the class
Kathy,
So sorry to hear about your bad month, but today starts a new month and hopefully it will be a better one for both you and Wayne.
Thanks for telling the story of Wayne's fall I'm sure I wasn't the only one who worried that it was something even scarier that put him in the hospital.
Glad you can get out and walk together, I know my husband enjoy doing that together as well.
So glad to hear that Wayne is doing better. Sorta sounds like the couple of months I had. My dad was diganosised with cancer at the beginning of Dec. and let me tell you it has been not so happy month until his operation on Jan 4 then he got the all clear cancer free call after his surgery. Couldn't have asked for anything better. I really believe in the power of prayer.
Congrats on loosing. I wish I would. I need to spend some time walking or maybe help restore the tractor husband just bought and had shipped via U ship. Yup. The same company that has a tv show now. I have trouble walking or using my right foot at all due to a fall on the ice last January. I am no spring chicken anymore and I am healing slowly. Anyway. Stay well and keep up the good work. Love the new background on the blog. Hope Wayne is feeling better.
I star my diet again and I hope can lose the weighh that I gain in Christmas 2 kilos but i wonk in on
Kathy still cheering us to have a healty life
sisi
Glad you are both feeling better. It's so much easier when someone cooks for you..especially healthy food! I keep trying but seem to fail after so long. I find looking after children during the day I just want something easy to cook which isn't always the best things!looking forward to seeing you both in Spring. My first show is Exeter.. my birthday!
Wayne says that his ideal weight is 160 pounds. He feels the best at that weight.
Wow! So glad both of you are better!! I suppose if you must be sick the perk is dropping a few pounds!! Not a pleasant way to do it though!! I'm sure all of you are very relieved Wayne had good test results!! That's great!
I am at my lowest weight in years! Yay me! Really strange, I've been cooking a lot and due to that I'm eatting less fatty / sugary foods I guess! Less junk/fast food too! I've never been a great cook, or actually any kind of cook so I have my family very confused! Ha!
I do need to start exercising... To at least help tone! I'm wanting to try yoga, but having trouble finding that motivation!! It's a great idea in my head!! LOL..
I hope you both continue to recover and get stronger!! Busy times ahead!!!
Kathy,
I am so sorry you and Wayne had a bad month, but happy you are both feeling better. Tell Wayne to be more careful. Maybe the rest of the year will be better for you.
That was so sweet of Michelle to cook for you and Wayne.
As far as dieting, I have been terrible since Christmas, I am afraid to weigh. I thought since yesterday was a new month I would try to eat less and not eat any junk food at all. I do walk but not everyday, so I will try walking everyday. I really miss some of us woman going to church and doing Zumba. I had to quit last summer because of my lower back problems.
I do not have an excuse not to walk, the whole month of Jan has been like spring in KY. I can't beleive how warm it has been, unreal and scary too.
Just out of curiosity, why are you not using Nutri System like Marie?
Hi Kathy, I a really pleased that both you and Wayne are on the mend. I have also had a bad start to the month, I had a mild heart attack a few days before the 2nd anniversary of my husbands passing, caused by stress they say, I am mending also. I slipped down the back steps in my garden last Friday whilst taking my puppy down so I am on crutches too. In 2013 I am going to hibernate. Hope to see Wayne and his brothers and you if you go in Cardiff on 14th April.
I discovered a very flavorful & healthful salad that I made and totally enjoyed last night -- thought it would be fun to share. . .
12 oz. Spring Mix or baby spinach (or a blend of each)
2 whole apples, cored & sliced very thin
1/2 cup pecan halves
1/4 cup dried cherries
5 oz. bleu cheese, crumbled
1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
1 tbsp. maple syrup (lite is fine)
1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
Mix the Dijon, maple syrup, vinegar, olive oil, and salt & pepper in a small bottle or Mason jar. Shake well to mix.
Put the greens, apples, pecans, cherries, and bleu cheese into a bowl. Toss with the dressing.
Serves 8. ENJOY! :-)
Wow!!! 160? That's like back in the 70's!!!! Well, you guys have fun working out together - enjoy those walks. I love going walking with my hubby in the evening, good time to talk things over and discuss the day.
I remember when I was 25 and a good lookin kid - (see my picture with Wayne in my FB archives - Cheryl Klein) when I weighed in at Wayne's ideal weight! Those are the memories!!! - besides I can't even think of not pursuing food - #1 I work retail and many people may leave the store with my patience fully fried!! or #2 it is Paczki time (not that I grew up on them by any means and my heritage dictates otherwise) but that ole bakery down the road just makes them way too yummy! Besides #3 last time I weighed 70 lbs less, I froze my tushie off in the winter! I do however, have 3 prs of size 18 jeans hanging in my closet I may be able to wear by the time I shrink down at 90 yrs old! Good luck with it everyone else - I will still blame my Diet Coke and the sodium being withheld in my body from it! This way you will all have more of me to love! Remember I said my Wii was for chasing Mario and FB is for chasing Osmonds!
I have used Nutrisystems to lose weight a couple of times and it really does work. I just can't turn down Michelle's delicious homemade, low-fat, low-sodium meals that don't contain any artificial chemicals or preservatives. When Michelle isn't able to cook for us in the future I may go back to Nutrisystems. Personally I like variety. My doctor says that I need to make a permanent lifestyle change by keeping track of what I eat, watching portion size and eating low-fat meals with regular exercise.
Kathy I'm with you. I think if I learn to make food that is low cal and low sodium then it truly is a lifestyle change. I'm glad Nutrisystems is out there but, it's expensive!!!! I like alot of variety as well, so I don't know if I'd stick with that for very long.
My February is more of the same... running, lifting weights and aerobic stepping. I am glad to hear that Wayne is doing well. It's always such a good feeling to know you're at your ideal weight. Good luck with your health and fitness in the upcoming year!
JeanneMarie --- It sounds like you and I have carbon-copy lifestyles! Couldn't begin to imagine my life without my daily workouts! I do all those same regiments. Are you veggie? Swear by my vegetarian lifestyle too! Life's great - animals' lives should be too! Best, Pat
Dear ckleinca: It is in friendship and fellowship that I urge you not to surrender your life to food but to seize control of your life and its quality to enjoy a rich life for a longer period of time. Freedom is NOT in wanton food choices but rather in wise food choices that keep our bodies better able to move and less dependant on chemical prescriptions - these things keep us chained in body, mind, spirit, and under financial pressure as well. I feel so much younger at 54 than I did 10 years and 95 pounds ago. Our life is in the Lord's loving care but we need to help Him help us. In kindred spiritedness, Pat
A year ago I found out that if I didn't change some things in my life I would die in 2 years! I am NOT over weight, but I don't feel in some parts of my body. I was born with Spina Bifada, but we didn't find that out til 6 years ago. I have been very careful not to gain weight all my life, but I have 2 bleeding ulcers that are in the 3rd stage and the 4th stage means cancer is the next step! The Dr. talked to me about things, he wanted to make it clear that a healthy diet was essential. Although I didn't think I was doing a bad job in my diet I found out a lot about what I was eating that would irritate the ulcers. So now I can't have anything citrus or acidic b/c it is bad for the ulcers! So is CHOCOLATE~ We feel so blessed that we found it, the Dr still doesn't get how I can't feel the pain, but I went to an appointment one day and a man was literally crying and doubled over, when I got in to see the Dr. I was telling him about this man and he said, that is the way you should be acting! I walked out of there scared and relieved if that makes sense. The bottom line is lifestyle change is the only way to go. Know what your body can handle. Just because oranges are healthy doesn't mean they are for everybody. I have learned to just pass on things and say that that is poison, I can't eat it~ Love yourself and exercise and eat right!
Dear Mary: Your forthcoming and frank eloquence was so beautiful - I welled up and read what you wrote twice. It seems counterintuitive, but freedom is found in discipline. That's been my discovery along my odyssey of weight loss and then a 10-year weight management. Lifestyle changes in both consistently wise food choices and consistent exercise of cardio, strength training, and flexibility training defies so much of our genetic predispositions and age. I appreciate your testimony of that and your willingness to share it on this Fast & Testimony Sunday. What a terrific Sabbath! Pat
I want to lose some weight that i have put on over the last year but am also stiffening up as I am getting older. Although I walk every day i really do need some motivation to get fit - unfortunately the weather at this time of year holds no incentive:(
Hi Kathy, I'm glad you and Wayne are feeling better. I am disappointed that you will not be in Tampa at Busch Gardens this week.I was looking forward to seeing you. Last year I missed the book signing because we went to the wrong location, and when we did get to the right place, you had just left. I have a wii and was contemplating getting the wii fit. I'm wondering if it has a beginner level, because I am so out of shape and have a bad knee. I need to get started exercising and diet. Thanks for your encouragement !!
Thanks to you Kathy, because of you I have started exercising . Our local nursing home allows the public to use their physical therapy gym and pool for only 20 dollars a month. It's fun and there are other ladies to chat with. I was down a year after I broke my ankle falling on ice. I had to have surgery and it is still stiff. The rest of me is out of shape. I can really tell I did something. Haha. I plan to go 2 days a week to start. Hopefully I will lose some weight in the process.
hope you and wayne have made a speedy recovery from the flu and hope wayne has made a speedy recovery from his fall.take care and get well soon xx
kathy, you could send us recipes for the delicious meals michelle had made for you and waynexx
