We love our friends!!!

Today Wayne and I rode up with my parents to the funeral of my sister's mother-in-law or my brother-in-law's mother, Ruth. She died suddenly after a fall and it was a complete shock to the family. Life is so precious and fragile that we need to be prepared to go back home at any time. We listened to General Conference on the drive up to Tremonton, Utah and arrived back home in time to watch the second session on television. We really enjoy the spiritual feast every six months.  You can view and listen to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints conference sessions tomorrow on the Internet.  They begin at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm Mountain Standard Time.

CLICK HERE to go straight to LDS.org where you can view and listen to the conference online or if you aren't able to watch tomorrow, you can listen, watch or read the words of the Prophet of God, President Thomas S. Monson, at a later date on this same website. Many people that aren't members of our religion also enjoy listening to conference every six months because the talks are so inspirational and uplifting. I'm sure that you will all enjoy the messages.

Wayne and I also want to thank so many of you for your recent prayers, flowers, cards, gifts, messages and emails that we have received to give us encouragement and strength. You are all such wonderful friends. Thank you.

How to Find a Spouse's Hidden Income

When Your Spouse Steals Your Money

When Your Spouse Steals Your Money
Mary and John are getting a divorce. Mary is sure that John, a physician, is hiding income. But how can she prove it?
Jim operates a restaurant in an office complex. He and his wife, Patricia, live a lavish lifestyle, so Patricia doesn't believe Jim when he files for divorce and says there's no money to pay alimony. But how can she find the money he has stashed?
These scenarios happen all the time. A business owner files for divorce and then says there is no money to pay child support or alimony. There are no W-2s for business owners, and accounting books are easy to manipulate. So, unless a spouse can prove otherwise, hidden income remains hidden. Luckily, there are ways to find it.
Forensic accountant Mark Kohn shows readers how to find a spouse's hidden income in his new book,How They Stash the Cash (March, 2012). Using case studies from his 25 years of experience, Mark provides simple explanations and practical tips to help divorcing parties find hidden income and get their fair share of support and divorce assets. Using Mark's book as a guide, here are three ways to check whether your spouse is stashing your cash:
1. Hire a private investigator. While private investigators can be expensive, they are very useful. In cases where there are suspicions of clandestine real estate acquisitions, secret bank accounts, or business deliveries to customers that are not on the books, a private investigator can be of great help. In one case, a woman hired a private investigator who uncovered an email exposing her husband's interest in an Oregon shopping center that had never been disclosed. While the husband confided that he had not gone through with the deal, he was so rattled by his wife's attorney's knowledge of his interest in the shopping center that he decided to settle before his wife's lawyer could uncover anything else.
2. Dig through the garbage--a treasure trove for people looking to find hidden income. One business owner (let's call him "David") set up secret accounts in his mother's name and deposited money into them without his mother's knowledge. This strategy would not have come to light without the diligence of a private investigator, who conducted a trash search and found an empty gift box with a card from a Florida law firm thanking David for his business. David's wife's lawyer subpoenaed the Florida law firm for all invoices that they issued to David or to any entity in which David had any interest. The Florida law firm complied by providing invoices relating to various Florida limited liability corporations. More subpoenas were issued, and the entire scheme eventually became clear.
3. Search for hidden files. Hidden income often manifests itself as income that is hidden from the IRS, but it is usually not completely hidden.  A good businessperson wants to know how his or her business is doing in order to improve any deficiency. Doing that requires real numbers. So while false numbers are given to the IRS, the real numbers are used to analyze the state of the business.  Obtaining those real numbers during a divorce is sometimes difficult, but Mark's clients have found them hidden everywhere from the office to the bedroom.
Mark offers clear explanations, vivid illustrations, and even red flags that suggest someone may be hiding income. And, as a forensic accountant in the Los Angeles area, he has plenty of entertaining anecdotes to tell about divorce in the Golden State.
So, did Mary ever find the cash she suspected her husband, John, of hiding? Yes, she did. She hired her friend Julie to pose as a patient. Julie paid in cash, John didn't put it on his books, and the scheme was exposed to each party's lawyers. John settled soon afterwards with terms favorable to Mary. He didn't want to have his scheme shared with the court—or the IRS. Jim fared much the same, settling out of court with terms favorable to Patricia.
With the two trillion dollars of income being hidden every year, it's nice to know that someone can find it. And now, with Mark's techniques, so can we.

Wayne's Day

After having a blood test at the lab and picking up mail at the post office, I told Wayne I'd take him wherever he wanted. Guess where he wanted to go?

We went to a couple tool stores, Granger Tools and Sears. He loves those tools!

Update

Wayne has been so surprised to see all the support he has been given - all your thoughts, prayers, cards, and gifts, etc. He was really touched that many of you have been dressing in orange for the concerts and/or worn badges to remember him. Josie sent me this photo of the badges they have been wearing in the UK to the Brothers' concerts.

Many people have also asked for an update on Wayne's condition, so I can help with that request. The past 54 years in show business has given Wayne so many wonderful memories and opportunities that he would not have experienced in any other profession. Wayne loves change and learning new things, so show business has been really fulfilling. Of course there have been difficult, exhausting and challenging times too, but only through show business could we have learned from these experiences. We want you to know that we realize that it is only because of you and your support over the years that have made all this possible. Thank you so much!

Most of the medical problems that Wayne has are probably related to the maximum amount of radiation that he had after brain cancer surgery and he will continue to have more long term effects.  On January 17th when he fell and hit his head really hard on the couch in the same place as where he had his brain cancer surgery and radiation, we weren't that alarmed. Michelle and I tried to talk him into letting us take him down to the emergency room at the hospital because his head and neck hurt, but he insisted that he was O.K. and wanted to wait to see how he felt the next day.

The following day he had an appointment already set up with his ear, nose and throat doctor to have his ears cleaned. Since the radiation, there has been a build up on his ear drums that the doctor has had to pull off regularly to improve his hearing. Wayne was nauseated and insisted that the doctor not get too close because he said that he had the flu. He complained about pressure and pain in his head and was carrying a bowl in case he couldn't keep his food down. I told the doctor that I wasn't sure that he had the flu and the doctor must have agreed because he ordered a scan to see if Wayne's sinus' were infected or if something would show up to help explain the symptoms he was experiencing.

Wayne's symptoms were exactly the same as he had right before he had his brain cancer removed, so we were a little nervous about a reoccurring tumor, which isn't that unusual to grow 10 to 15 years after having radiation to the head. The doctor scheduled an MRI for the following day. I was really surprised when the doctor called later that evening to say that there was evidence of a possible stroke and to take him immediately to the emergency room. That thought hadn't even occurred to me.

The neurologist on call at the hospital that night suggested that his mini stroke was related to the fall that he had and that he probably ripped the lining of his left back posterior artery. There is no way to know which came first - the fall or the stroke. There also isn't any way to test whether the lining of the artery, which was totally blocked, was torn or severely damaged. It's also too dangerous to operate but the body has a way of healing itself so that is why Wayne is taking it easy for at least another month. The mini stroke turned into a major stroke a couple of days later after Wayne sat up in bed at the hospital. At this time his problems were magnified, but he has been improving since that day.

Many of you may have noticed since 2005 that it was necessary for someone to travel with Wayne all the time because of his gradual hearing loss, cognitive deficiencies, and equilibrium problems. His hearing is now severe in both ears, he has short-term memory loss, difficulty learning new material, and falls backwards when moving around, etc. His brothers made it possible for him to continue working by gesturing when his singing went off pitch or covering his singing, using songs and material that were in his long term memory and helping him if he got off balance, etc. The past 3 years Wayne had had to catch himself when he got off balance by putting his left foot behind him. It has been very stressful for him to continue performing when he has also been dealing with so many health problems that have only been getting progressively worse.

Many have noticed and asked why Wayne's photo has been taken off of the scheduled dates on the Osmond Brothers website for the rest of the year. Wayne is unable to continue working and performing. He's using a cane to catch himself to make sure that he doesn't have another debilitating fall. The end of April, the doctor wants to do another MRI to see how his healing is coming and re-evaluate his situation. I've been taking care of all the business and personal responsibilities and driving Wayne to all his various medical appointments. Wayne wants to visit Sears and other stores that carry tools almost every day too. Ha! For another month, Wayne's making sure that he heals and doesn't have another fall by mostly laying on the couch in the family room and playing with his Ipad or doing crossword puzzles. He's loving the Ipad now that he has had plenty of time to get acquainted with it. Wayne's very upbeat and loves all his time to relax. He's enjoying life.

What if your friend lies to you?

Having acquired some frequent flier miles and not wanting them to be taken away because of inactivity, I ordered a magazine to keep the account active so I wouldn't lose my remaining miles. The magazine "Health" seemed like a safe choice and an issue arrived today in the mail. Curious about the new magazine, I opened it and started reading what I thought would be some very good tips.

In an article entitled, "3 Stress Fixes to Try," it tells a problem and then suggests the way to fix the stress that would be experienced by the problem. The first problem was how to relieve my stress when my friend lies to me. The "FIX" that was recommended was to GOSSIP, because it can be very therapeutic. This answer REALLY shocked me!

The author claims that a new study suggests that when a person discovers that their peer has behaved badly, their heart rate goes up and when they tell others about it that their heart rate slows down. "Gossip alleviates the negative emotions we feel when someone behaves in an antisocial way," says co-author Robb Willer, PhD, assistant professor of sociology at UC-Berkeley.

Are we living in a society where it is now more important for us to think only about ourselves and how we can alleviate our own discomfort and negative emotions without even considering how our gossip may affect our friend and destroy her reputation? Will this "FIX" of telling all our peers about our friend's moral deficiencies really make us feel better?

I know that gossiping and telling everyone that my friend lies to me is not going to help my discomfort and I know that there are definitely better solutions to helping my friend realize the serious consequences of lying than destroying her reputation.

What is your perspective on lying? Is it O.K. to lie if you don't get caught? If you catch a friend lying to you, do you have a responsibility to help them? I'm eager to hear how you would FIX the stress that you feel when a friend lies to you and how you would handle the situation. Please post your thoughts, ideas, comments, and possible solutions to this problem. I hope to hear from everyone!

Memory Book

Today we picked up a package at a cousin's house and what a delightful surprise! Laura M. put together a wonderful, colorful, bright book of memories for Wayne and me.

Wayne read and studied every page! I don't think that he has ever finished a whole book before in one sitting.

An example from the book which holds so many fond memories.  Wayne shared his memories with me of what he remembered on each page and photo.

Wayne loved seeing all his old guitars and costumes in the photos - except the goofy plaid suits that he, Jay and Donny had to wear. "Why didn't Alan and Merrill have to wear goofy plaid suits too?" Wayne remembers being jealous when Jay got to wear the bullet belt in another group photo. "Good Old Bill, the duck," brought back some very fond memories. Wayne liked having a photo of himself playing the bagpipes. "Look at all of us on that little scooter!" "Vicki and Darren have two pages in the book!" These are just some of the comments that Wayne made when going through the book page by page while giving me the historical background and details of each photo.

We both enjoyed seeing all the family photos through the years, the comments and photos from friends, and the different stages of Wayne's show business career!

We are going to put this beautiful book full of happy and wonderful memories on our living room table so everyone that visits can enjoy the book too.

A very special thank you to Laura for being so thoughtful to organize, design, edit and put the book together. Also a big thank you to many others that contributed such as: Trina M., Linda S., Lourdes M., Dot T., Vicki & Darren P., and Geri & Paul R.

"Wonky's Book Worms"

                                                                                                         Enos Praying

How is everyone doing on their Book of Mormon reading? Wayne and I have really enjoyed reading the Book of Mormon together. My favorite part of the reading this month were the testimonies of the prophets Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Enos and Isaiah.

"And now I, Nephi, write more of the words of Isaiah, for my soul delighteth in his words. For I will liken his words unto my people and I will send them forth unto all my children, for he verily saw my Redeemer, even as I have seen him.

And my brother, Jacob, also has seen him as I have seen him; wherefore, I will send their words forth unto my children to prove unto them that my words are true. . . " (2 Nephi 11:3)

Most of us will not have the experience of seeing our Lord and Savior in mortality so we live by faith, keeping the commandments of the Lord and enduring to the end. I am trying to apply the doctrine of Christ in my life so I may see my Redeemer and be worthy to have the experience that Enos describes.

"And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me; Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father."
(Enos 1:27)

Today, March 4th, is the first Sunday in the month and on the schedule we should be reading Jarom. I hope you are all hanging in there with us by reading a chapter of the Book of Mormon every day. April 1st will be the first Sunday in April and we should be reading Mosiah Chapter 26 on that date.

Please post your comments, experiences and how you can apply your reading in March to your life. I love to read your posts.
